Two girls from Barrackpore have been booked by the Barrackpore cyber cell for uploading a video on social media, in which they were seen incoherently singing the National Anthem while smoking.
The video went viral, prompting several social media users to lodge police complaints demanding action against the duo. It is not known if the girls are minors, but according to some reports, they are in class XI.
"An investigation has started. The necessary details about the post on Facebook or any other social media platform are being collected. Further action will be taken soon after the investigation," said Aloke Rajoria, police commissioner, Barrackpore.
After the video went viral, the girls deleted it from Facebook, but went live on another social media platform, claiming it was made for fun and as part of a wager among friends.
According to sources, the police have collected the video, and an investigation is underway. BJP general secretary Anupam Bhattacharjee shared the video on Twitter, asking for the girls' identities.
"As provided in Section 3 of the National Honour Act, 1971, whoever intentionally prevents singing of National Anthem or causes disturbances or dishonour to any assembly engaged in singing of National Anthem shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both," said Biren Bhakat, a senior lawyer of Barrackpore SDJM court.
